It’s important to try and do a regular safety check on your vehicle at least once a month to monitor the following things:

• The engine oil, transmission fluid, windscreen washer liquid, radiator coolant, brake and clutch fluid
• Tyres to ensure they are in good condition and at the right pressure, don’t forget your spare
• All of the gauges and warns lights work when you start the vehicle
• The lights outside the vehicle are all in working order
• All your glass is free from chips, cracks or scratches
• The handbrake holds the vehicle still on steep hills
• Your horn works

If you come across anything broken, ensure you have it looked at by a mechanic as soon as possible.

It is also recommended that you check your seatbelts and child’s seat restraints are in good conditions, your battery is clean and secure, your fan belt has good tension and not cracked or frayed and that you do not have a brittle or cracked radiator hose.
